...”The series of murals being painted by Brenda Councill will distinguish this facility even more. It is truly special to have an artist who has such deep roots to the region bring her talents to this project. Her work will be enjoyed by those who visit the library for years to come,” said Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock.

The mural is painted to appear as an open atrium revealing sky and clouds with a carved frieze surround of faux limestone panels featuring famous mountain peaks and the natural beauty of the region. “ We are thrilled to be a part of this project, the legacy, and the idea of fusing art with illusion is so very unique” Mr. Belk said.

A  documentary of the entire work is currently being filmed by  Dr. Jeff Fletcher, a distinguished professor of Media Studies and Greg Williams, Technical Director and Production Manager of Theatre and Dance.

Artist at work on upper tier of 90 foot atrium. Councill describes the process and her concept of illustrating the landmark images of natural beauty so familiar in this region.

Just a glimpse of the scaffolding being erected.

This has been a five day process. The scaffolding

height exceeds 75 feet. The majority of my time

will be spent on the top tiers of the scaffolding.

The glass walls in the atrium will be shielded as I work .
