The Harriet Beecher Stowe Cottage
as depicted by artist Brenda Mauney Councill. Mrs. Stowe first visited Mandarin, Florida in 1867, after the end of "The War Between The States". she returned to spend the winter months in her "Beloved Mandarin" until the winter of 1883-84. Her legacy in Mandarin is well documented and her devoted efforts helped build a "Freedman's Bureau" (now the Community Club) and the original Gothic-style structure of "The Church Of Our Saviour". The "Cottage" was dismantled at the turn-of-the-century by her nephew. A historical marker near "The Community Club" remains to remind the tourist to Mandarin of their "most famous resident".
